Tolerating Death in a Culture of Intolerance | Economic and Political Weekly.
COMMENTARY Economic & Political Weekly EPW MARCH 21, 2015 vol l no 12 11 by?Shahidul Alam
The daylight murder of Bangladeshi blogger Avijit Roy in Dhaka on 26 February reflects the culture of fear and intolerance that has built up in the country over the last few decades. As a result, the middle ground between the extremes has disappeared.
Returning home with your wife, from a book fair where you have been signing autographs, seems a peaceful enough activity. It was in the heart of the university area, and it was not late. The footpath next to Ramna Park, where the 1971 surrender document had been signed, was full of people. Shahbagh Police Thana was nearby, and a police barricade designed to keep visitors to the mela safe, was only a few yards away. Hardly the scene crime stories are made of.

It was a few yards away from where Dr. Milon had been killed. Then it had been?suspected the police were involved. This time, the police were a silent witness. Blogger and human rights activist Dr. Avijit Roy and his wife?Rafida Ahmed Banna?were returning home after visiting the Amar Ekushey Book Fair. Their ricksha was stopped, they were dragged out and Avijit was hacked to death. Banya?was severely injured and lost a finger.? Continue reading “How many more Avijit's must we mourn?”

The BOBs – Deutsche Welle Blog Awards

The BOBs – Deutsche Welle Blog Awards.

The BOBs begin on February 13

FEBRUARY 9, 2012

That time of year has come around again. Starting on February 13, we?ll be looking for your suggestions for the eighth annual Deutsche Welle International Blog Awards ? better known as the BOBs.
Like last year, we?re getting ready to accept your favorite sites in 11 languages. We understand: Arabic, Bengali, Chinese, English, French, German, Indonesia, Persian, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish.
This year we?re also happy to announce that the BOBs site is back at full strength and available in all 11 of the competition?s languages ? in fact, we?re putting the finishing touches on the site right now!
While there are some changes in store for 2012, including a couple of new faces on the jury panel (more about them soon), the BOBs will still feature a Jury Awards as well as User Prizes. The combination of online voting and jury-selected winners makes sure the BOBs continues to honor the best blogs, websites and campaigns on the Internet without turning into a popularity contest.

This year our jury of media experts, activists and bloggers will meet up in Berlin in May to debate and decide who takes home top honors in the BOBs. Patricia Cammarata, better known as das Nuf, joins the panel for German and Steve Vosloo comes on-board for the English-speaking world. We?ll be giving you a more intimate introduction to Patricia and Steve, as well as the rest of the jury members, in just a few days time. Continue reading “The BOBs – Deutsche Welle Blog Awards”

Probably because it was first invented in Europe and probably because it was, for a long time, a rich man?s club, photography has been predominately a western hemisphere preoccupation. For a very long time both its creators ( photographers) and its support ( magazines) have been geolocated in those countries that had fought the second world war. The rest of the world was only involved in photography as a subject but not a participant.
No longer. Cameras have reach affordable pricing while the internet has made publishing extremely easy and cheap. It is the end of the western?s world hegemony on photography. No longer can the so call developed countries can and should impose its photographic vision. Enters?Majority World photo agency.
Majority World is a not just a new photo agency but rather, as they call themselves, a social enterprise, that works with very talented photographers from Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Middle East. They bring this vision to the old world, facilitating in the process the emergence of a strong local photographic creative culture. They bridge the gap between photographers from emerging countries and image buyers from developed countries, allowing the third world visual voice to be heard, or rather to be seen. Because they are not tangled in cultural cliches or image saturation like their North American or European peers, the?Majority World photographers bring highly refreshing and extremely talented imagery.
Majority World has just recently relaunched it?s online platform here šŸ˜•http://www.majorityworld.com
