Just The Right To Be Equal

Dear compatriots,

As you know, the common people were holding protests across the country today demanding the resignation of this illegal, murderous government. But the Awami League, Jubo League and Chhatra League goons have disrupted our peaceful programme and fired indiscriminately at us in broad daylight. The last we heard, at least a hundred people were shot dead across the country. Dictator Sheikh Hasina must take responsibility for this massacre today — and since the 15th of July.

The people of Bangladesh did not vote for this government in the last three elections. The ongoing tsunami of protest against this government proves that 99 per cent people of the country hate this government. They are now holding on to power by killing innocent people with less than a percentage of armed and powerful people.

Therefore, it is the moral responsibility of the international community to stand by the common people of Bangladesh and create international pressure to oust this fascist, murderous and authoritarian government before this series of massacres takes the form of genocide. We call upon the free world, the United Nations and in fact the world as a whole to immediately support our one-point demand: which is the resignation of Sheikh Hasina.

We the students are not fighting for power. We don’t have an iota of greed for it. We just want to establish for our generation and the future generations a just democratic state system where everyone can grow up with equal opportunities and rights. We are ready to give our lives for this.

The people of the country have shown unprecedented solidarity in our movement. Now, the participation of common people is more than the students in this movement. We are overwhelmed by the incredible courage shown by children and the elderly, the women and the common man in joining this movement. We have seen how the youths are defying the bullets and conquering death with smiles on their faces, we have seen thousands of nameless labourers and toilers standing at the forefront of our march.

We no longer fear the bullets. The more they fire at us, the more steadfast our resolve becomes — this is igniting anger and hatred against this government like a gunpowder.

Dear countrymen, you have already driven out the police forces of this government from many cities. Your next destination is Dhaka. Starting now, I urge all of you to head towards Dhaka. All of us will protest in Dhaka on Monday.

You must be aware that the fascist, murderous and authoritarian Awami League regime has issued a curfew from 6 pm today. That was not out of concern for the safety of people and property but to safeguard its own party office and illegal government. But this government has no constitutional or moral right to take any such decision by violating the fundamental rights of the people. Therefore, let us all reject this curfew — with hatred, with vigour.

If Sheikh Hasina’s forces fire at us, we will be forced to peacefully march towards Gono Bhaban to bring down the government.

Together we shall be victorious!
