Curatorial discourse in Europe

CCA and Independent Curators International (ICI) announce the first Curatorial Intensive in Europe

CCA and ICI are pleased to present the first?Curatorial Intensive?in Europe:?From ?Official History? to Underrepresented Narratives. Developed by ICI in collaboration with CCA the programme will examine the role of cultural production in addressing geopolitical landscapes and recent histories. The week-long programme, taking place between May 19th?and 25th, will take concepts of narrative and memory as the theoretical and poetic underpinning to reflect upon recent social developments in specific geographies, while questioning the ability of art and exhibition-making to act as catalyst for change.
Through an international roster of speakers,?From ?Official History? to Underrepresented Narratives?will consider the tension between remembrance and forgetting, and the role of art and cultural institutions in creating a discourse of national identity and giving visibility to overlooked histories. Seminars, site visits, individual meetings, and roundtable discussions will be led by the following faculty: Miguel Amado (curator, the Portuguese Pavilion at the 2013 Venice Biennale), Mai Abu ElDahab (independent curator), Annie Fletcher (Curator of Exhibitions at the Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven, and tutor at De Appel, Amsterdam), Khwezi Gule (Contemporary Collections Curator, Johannesburg Art Gallery), Peter Jenkinson (independent cultural broker and Co-Director, Culture+Conflict), and Paul Ram?rez Jonas (artist and Assistant Professor, Hunter College, NY), amongst others.?Attracting the highest caliber of curator from the international arts world, the Curatorial Intensive offers a unique opportunity for local curators to develop and learn alongside the very best in their field.
Fees and Scholarships: The programme fee is 1,900 USD or 1,200 GBP. Participants are also responsible for covering travel and accommodation expenses.?Scholarship packages that subsidise or eliminate the program fees, accommodation, and travel expenses are available and awarded based on merit.?A number of scholarships for Northern Irish participants by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland and Turkish nationals will be supported by SAHA.
About the Curatorial Intensive
The Curatorial Intensive is ICI?s short-term, low-cost training programme that offers 12 to 14 curators the chance to develop project ideas and make connections with professionals in the field. It also provides the invaluable opportunity for peer-group education, forging new networks internationally. The Curatorial Intensive takes place twice annually in New York, and in other locations in conjunction with institutional partners worldwide. To date there have been 11 Curatorial Intensives including one in Brazil and China, and two each in Mumbai and Philadelphia. Since 2010, ICI has received 768 applications from curators in 63 countries. In two years 165 curators have participated in the programmes from 39 countries and 19 U.S. states.

Don't breathe

By Ronny Sen

For millions, traveling inside unreserved general compartments in Indian trains is an inescapable Indian experience. A rapidly escalating inflation has resulted in severe hikes in fuel prices in India, compelling an increasing number of people to travel in unreserved general compartments of the Indian Railways. Memorial for Pandit Ravi Shankar

In 2010, I went to Raviji to share my dream of reconstructing the ‘ Concert for Bangladesh 71’? by George Harrison and friends in Bangladesh to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Bangladesh’s independence. I told him I wished to stage a big concert in Dhaka to reflect the spirit of that concert and use the voice of music to draw attention to climate change. He patiently listed and pondered – there was an excitement in his eyes but his wisdom prevailed and he quietly gave me some advise which I heard and respected. When I then wrote to him a few months later to let him know that instead we were staging the first ever ‘ Dhaka World Music Festival’ – he sent me blessings?which once again spoke of his deep belief that the voice of music transcends all geographical barriers and it is a powerful voice of unity. I realised also at the time that he has a real soft corner for Bangladesh and that it was sad that his role in the ‘Recognition of Bangladesh’ by the ordinary people of the world was never recognised and honoured as it should have been…. 40 years had gone by.
In 2011, Channel i, one of the largest TV Channels in Bangladesh approached me in London to see if Raviji could be present at one of their mega celebrations being staged at the Jamuna Bridge with the Jamuna river as a backdrop.? Sounded amazing, but I told them that in view of Ravij’s age and ailing health it would be impossible to do that ,even though they were ready to make best possible travel arrangements. The alternative suggested was for Channel i to perhaps relay a message from him on the day.. They agreed and said they would arrange for their crew from New York to go to San Diego to record Raviji’s message which would be transmitted onto three big screens to reach the thousands in the audience.? I took the proposal to Raviji – we had 3 days to do something. His response was surprising. He said it would be superfluous and costly for a team to fly all the way from New York? and added that? he had his own recording crew , so he would do a video recording and with mordern technology now available Channel i would get it well in time to transmit it on screen. It was done and delivered as promised in two days!? Raviji was a very special human being – his positive mind and forward thinking was exemplary…….. and these recent instances I recollect only reflects that .
One could go remembering so much more – the small dinners at my home when he wanted Maach Bhat . He always insisted that we keep it small and contained within the family so we could all meaningfully interact. There were other festive gatherings when he would delight us all with his stories or his views on a political situation or share encouraging and generous words on other up and coming musicians…….and so much more.
Today – the 12th day of the 12th month of the 12th year of the 21st century we have lost a Sitar maestro, a guru, a legendary figure in the world of music, a dear friend, a well wisher and a very special human being who so many in the world so loved and will so miss.

MEMORY & IDENTITY

WORKSHOPS in Nepal by Annu Palakunnathu Matthew

Organised by Photo Circle 3 – 6 December 2012

Old photographs remind us of our past and where we have come from and the silent stories that these photographs insinuate. Participants will reconsider notions of perception of memory and identity as they relate to history and photography?s presumed veracity. To create work, participants will explore existing photo archives, their own family photographs, film footage and objects related to their families in order to create work related to their identity and perceived memories. The workshop?s primary focus will be related to photography but participants can use this as a springboard for creating work in other media such as collages, stop motion animations, videos and installations, sound installations, oral histories, etc. Discussions and slide shows will be conducted in the mornings and students are expected to work on their projects in the afternoons. This workshop is for anyone- writers, musicians, housewives, photographers- who would like to explore the way memory can be shaped and reshaped. Continue reading “MEMORY & IDENTITY”
