She was simple and sophisticated, charming and exuberant, quietly noisy, mildly strong, mischievously coy and full of life even in eminent death.
We made plans seated in the Drik conference room. She wanted to study. She wanted to take on more responsibilities, she wanted to be more than a pretty, smiling face at the Reception. “I wish I could take your place one day” she said to me. I marveled at her courage. An unpopular HR Manager’s post is not what most would aspire to attain. “What’s stopping you?” I asked. “So much pressure to be good wife and mother, no time to be anything else” she said, little realising she didn’t have much time to be either, leave alone my post. The Bangladeshi War of Liberation, like all other wars, has a contested history. The number killed, the number raped, the number displaced, are all figures that change depending upon who tells the story.
But in our attempt to be on the ?right side? of history, we often forget those who ended up on the wrong side. Those who have gone, those who were permanently scarred, mentally, physically, socially, don?t really care about our statistics. The eyes that stare into empty space, knowing not what they are searching, the frail legs, numbed by fatigue, drained by exhaustion, yet willed on by desperation, the wrinkled hands, seeking a familiar touch, a momentary shelter, longing for rest, do not care about the realpolitik of posturing superpowers.

Drik, the Bangladesh Partner of Prince Claus Fund (PCF) invites application for grants on cultural initiatives from organizations and individuals in Bangladesh.
The Deadline for submission: 5pm, 15 March 2012.

Professional HD Film-making with Barry Braverman
Pathshala and Drik are pleased to announce that Barry Braverman, the?acclaimed Cinematographer and HD Video Producer will be leading a 16-day?workshop from March 16th to April 6th, 2012.
A veteran director of photography and digital media consultant expert with more than thirty years experience, Barry has also worked on National Geographic specials and programmes for Discovery and the ABC. A frequent collaborator of director Wes Anderson, Braverman photographed the original TrailerforBottleRocket (1992) and contributed to other productions including TheDarjeelingLimited (2007). Braverman hosts the Video Shooter website and blog?and offers frequent camera training workshops and classes at locations throughout the U.S. and the world.
?Professional HD Film-making with Barry Braverman? welcomes both the experienced and the young in the film-making world to an intensive training on the professional processes and aspects of HD film-making. The programme will be hosted by Pathshala: South Asian Media Academy in partnership with Drik and Culturepot Global.
Over the course of this three-week workshop you will be fully immersed in the art and craft of video storytelling. Utilizing the latest Panasonic professional cameras you will explore the discipline of effective image capture, learn proper camera operation and control, and understand how to frame, compose and create compelling close ups. You will understand and apply the workshop mantra to exclude! exclude! exclude! as you explore such techniques as soft focus, three-dimensional lighting, and choice of lens focal length, to most effectively convey your intended story.
The workshop?s many exercises are designed to build confidence and enthusiasm for?developing your filmmaking skill set. Covering setups and genres from dialogue scenes to green screen, you will gain proficiency in the total process from script to screen. Storyboarding, effective pitching techniques, and overall story development, will be key components of your training, and because we are concerned with the total filmmaker the workshop will also cover the rudiments of editing with Apple Final Cut Pro (or Adobe Premiere) as each participant will produce a five minute production. At the close of the course, a public screening of films produced during the workshop will be hosted by Pathshala: South Asian Media Academy.

WAN-IFRA Appoints Representative in Bangladesh
To take WAN-IFRA services closer to publishers in the country
The World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WAN-IFRA) has appointed Drik Picture Library Ltd., the leading picture and news agency of Bangladesh, as its representative in the country, in a move to bring WAN-IFRA?s services closer to local publishers.
As each country in the Indian sub-continent displays unique characteristics and challenges, the representation will help to address the specific needs of Bangladesh?s publishers and will include local media events and training.

Twelve musicians are at the core of the band Lokkhi Terra and will mix traditions from around the world, using Bengali folk and groove as their starting points. They have all performed around the world at venues such as Ronnie Scotts, Royal Albert Hall, Royal Festival Hall, the House of Commons, Glastonbury and at Womad.? They were one of the critics’ choices at this year?s Womad festival in the UK, and was the band chosen to perform at the closing ceremony of the South Asian Games 2010.
Lokkhi Terra’s two albums No Visa Required, and Che Guevara?s Rickshaw Diaries, received much critical acclaim around the world.

The news photograph brings down powerful autocrats, highlights the plight of a single child, shines a spotlight on communities in strife, ignites the passion of victory, shares the tragedy of loss.
But the manufacture of consent has rarely been more engineered. With everything from wars to presidential campaigns being stage-managed and with mainstream news increasingly fed by official sources, reliance on usual sources of news images has become increasingly dangerous. Twenty-one-year-old Shankar Sarkar is both perturbed and fascinated by the surroundings he grew up in ? a red light area in the city. Shankar’s discomfort resulted in him dropping out of school but his enchantment led him to click a series of photographs of his mother, eventually enabling him to find a niche for himself in professional photography.
On the occasion of Children’s Day, a three-day exhibition of photographs taken by two children from the margins was inaugurated here on Monday.
?From the first time that I held a camera in my hand (a compact Yashica film camera that had to be shared by six boys from the slum), I have been taking pictures of my mother ? scenes from her daily life,? says Shankar, adding that in this manner he has been ?documenting? her life over the last ten years.
He says he would love to take pictures of others in the neighbourhood ? he has known them for years. But when he steps out with his camera, ?it invariably leads to a fight?. Sometimes he visits other red light areas in the city, for instance Sonagachi.
