His photographs of the bleak but strangely beautiful warehouses and of the logo-bearing, corporate, pylon-like signs that often stand nearby seem largely emptied of discursive, annotative meaning. Because both the warehouses and the emptied sign-structures that are his subject offer no internal articulation, they are essentially scale-less, possessing temporality rather than interiority, and having more to do with duration, extension and proliferation than with architecture or idea. This leads them towards a role as extrapolated Minimalist objects: constant, indivisible and, being spectacle-free (in the Debarring sense), paradoxically neutral, though imbued with the grace of presenters. Frank Breuer studied photography at the University of Applied Sciences in Cologne and at the D?sseldorf Academy of Arts, where he received the graduation certificate and the distinction of master student under Bernd Becher. Massimo Vitali was born in Como, Italy, in 1944, and after high school, moved to London where he took a course in photography at the London College of Printing. At the beginning of the eighties, he switched career paths and became a cinematographer for television and cinema, before turning his attention back to photography. Barcelona, the birthplace of the magazine OjodePez is the starting point for a new key date?for international documentary photography.?The Virreina Centre de la Imatge and La F?brica organize OjodePez Photo Meeting?Barcelona, an event focused on documentary photography which aims to encourage?involvement, a new meeting place for photographers and those with a passion for this?genre.
From 15th to 17th July 2010 La Virreina Centre de la Imatge will be hosting a programme?of activities consisting of projections in the street, master conferences, talks, debates,?documentary films and a portfolio viewing.

OJODEPEZ. PHOTO MEETING BARCELONA

The programme for OjodePez Photo Meeting Barcelona consists of: Portfolio Viewing. The?viewings will take place between Thursday 15th and Friday 16th July in the patio of the La?Virreina Centre de la Imatge.?Professional viewers will be taking part, such as James Wellford, Christian Caujolle,
Anna Baeza, Chris Boot, Shahidul Alam, Silvia Omedes or Gigi Gianuzzi, among?others?Conferences. Some of the best known photographers such as Oliviero Toscani, Susan?Meiselas, Stephen Mayes and Adam Broomberg & Oliver Chanarin will be talking?about their work, and will offer their personal view of the state of documentary photography?in the modern world.
Face to face. Two photographers and a current issue. Pairs who will confront each other for?a light-hearted meeting. These are the ingredients for the Face to Face programme, a?place for debate where the public is also a central part. Critics, curators and photographers?such as Robert Pladge, Shahidul Alam, Christian Caujolle, Chris Boot, James?Wellford and Donald Weber will be taking part, among others.
Debates. For one hour, photographers and curators will speak about issues such as?collectionism in the field of documentary, photography book publishing, and how Russia?has been portrayed by overseas photographers. Participants: Sven Ehman, Craig Cohen,?Liza Faktor, Anna Zekria, James Wellford, Silvia Omedes, Pepe Fontdemora,?Fernando Peracho and Susan Meiselas.
Projections. 15 minutes projections of the work of photographers such as Michael?Ackerman, James Mollison, Aitor Lara, Carlos Spottorno, Donald Weber, or Alfonso?del Moral, among others, followed by a question and answer session on the work shown,?with the artists in person.
Documentary film. As also happens in other artistic areas, film is closely linked to the?world of photography, as it is based on the same technical principles. The Meeting has?prepared an open call for film creator photographers to present an audiovisual piece on?photography. These works will be screened at the La Virreina Centre de la Imatge. Details?of how to take part can be found at Bookstore. The Meeting will also have a shop for looking at and purchasing copies of?works by the photographers involved in the event. This will act as a meeting point for?authors and public.
Exhibition. In parallel to the event, the La Virreina Centre de la Imatge will also be offering?the photography exhibitions Antiphotojournalism curated by Carles Guerra and Thomas?Keenan. The display falls under the context of a crisis which threatens to illegitimise?photojournalism as a photographic genre which up to now has kept us informed of events?taking place around the world. The exhibition will deal with the unease of a professional?practice criticised more and more for its way of portraying catastrophe. Although nobody?can conceive the complete disappearance of these pictures, many professionals have?adopted a self-critical attitude (Susan Meiselas, Paul Fusco, Gilles Peress) thus exposing?the limitation of photojournalism.
The explosion of alternative means of covering events, and crowd sourcing, have worn?away the objectivity of the reporter and have highlighted the circulation of images which?lose their connection with the context in which they have been taken. Antiphotojournalism?includes works by Allan Sekula, Ariella Azoulay, Gilles Saussier, Phil Collins, Walid?Raad, Paul Fusco, Hito Steyerl, Renzo Martens, Harun Farocki among other artists and?agencies.

DIRECTION

OjodePez Photo Meeting Barcelona is directed by Frank Kalero (Cambrills, Tarragona,?1973). A graduate in Audiovisual Communication from the Pompeu Fabra University in?Barcelona, and with a Masters in Documentary Photography from ICP (International Center?of Photography) in New York, he is the founder-director of the magazine OjodePez and was?responsible for the launch of Vice Brazil from S?o Paulo. In 2009 in Berlin he founded the?art magazine The world according to.?He is currently working in New Delhi on the launch of a new photography magazine for all?Asian countries, called Punctum. He combines this task with freelance work for a number of?national and international media.

OjodePez-NISSAN Cube PHOTOGRAPHY CONTEST

Nissan Cube, the official Meeting car promoted the photography by running a contest for?participants to reflect their urban vision of the Nissan Cube. The winner enjoyed with a?Nissan Cube car during one month with petrol and insurance.
During six weeks the contest have received more than 4500 pictures presented through?www.ojodepez.org which had to transmit and express emotion, enthusiasm, versatility,?innovation, courage, exclusiveness, functionality and flexibility.?The results will be decided on Friday 16th July at 18.00 h, at La Virreina Centre de la?Imatge yard. Water and Cities Photo Contest 2010

The World Water Council is launching the International Water Photo contest on the occasion of the Expo 2010 Shanghai China to raise wider awareness on the many water facets in urban areas. All selected pictures will be screened on the World Water Pavilion at the Expo 2010, and an international?Jury will vote for the best three photos to be printed for exhibition.

“Water and Cities”

The photos in competition should tell a news story about water in cities from around the world. They should capture the essence of?a happening in a single moment translating into a frozen picture. The photos can convey action, passiveness, success or failure, urgency or progress but should be centered around how urban life affects water and interacts with water.

• Water in urban life ? Turn on your tap and the water flows? or not. Where does your water come from, which cycle does it follow from its source to sink, what happens with it once it?s flushed?
• Water and Climate Change ? floods, droughts, pollution and scarcity are just some of the challenges millions of people experience in the face of climate change. What are their solutions or recurrent problems? What?is the reality of?climate change?in small or mega cities?
• Water for Health and Development ? What are the efforts to reach a universal access to water and sanitation? How to citizens see and appreciate their connection and access?

Participation

No entry fee, payment or purchase is required. Each entrant may fill the entry form and submit only?one picture. Photographs must be in digital format. Only online entries will be eligible, no print or film submission will be accepted for entry into this contest All digital files must be 5 megabytes or smaller, must be in JPEG or JGP format, with a resolution of at least 300 dpi, a minimum size of 1600×1200 pixels, landscape or portrait, and in color. Deadline for submissions is?15 July 2010. Mail notifying winners will be sent out before 6 Septembre 2010.

By sending the Entry Form, the participant consents to entry of his or her submission and agrees to the Official rules and Regulations and the decisions of the judges.

Judging Criteria

A first selection will be made by the prize committee according to the compliance of the pictures with the theme and with requested format and quality. The eligible pictures will be submitted to the Jury and screened on the World Water Pavilion during the ?Water month? of the Shanghai Expo, from?6 September to 6 October 2010.

The Jury will select the Prize winners, taking into consideration:

• The impact of the picture
• The originality and aesthetics of the photography
• The technical excellence

Seventeenth International Festival of Visual Arts for the Youth

IRAN

The Visual Arts Centre of the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance in association with its Provincial Office in Golestan Province and Islamic Culture and Communication Organization is organizing the Seventeenth International Festival of Visual Arts for the Youth to encourage competition in artistic creativity and expand professional repertoire of art students and to connect Iranian young artists to artists from across the world. Presence of experienced scholars and distinguished artists in various fields of visual arts will be an asset to the festival. The festival will provide an excellent opportunity to present and discuss new subjects and share fresh experiences in visual arts. Artists will participate in workshops and special competition of the festival and the jury panel will eventually select a number of artists to be awarded. The guidelines and criteria for selection and participation of art students in various fields of visual arts can be summed up as below:
The festival will include the following fields:

1. Drawing,
2. Painting (acrylic, oil on canvas),
3. Graphic design (poster),
4. Sculpture (plaster and clay),
5. Cartoon,
6. Miniature painting,
7. Calligraphy (Nasta’liq),
8. Photography,
9. Pottery.

Note: Drawing and photography sections of the festival will be held outdoors.

Selection process

International artists are advised to present their sample work to the Cultural Centre at the Iranian Embassy or representative of the festival in their respective country. They will be notified once their eligibility is verified by the organizing committee. Young volunteers will receive written notification from the Cultural Centre of the Iranian embassy to submit three sample works and personally appear for an interview. The selected artists will then be notified.

Requirements and deadline for participation

Material needed for registration of qualified applicants must be received by the secretariat of the festival by the 9th of June 2010. The secretariat will not admit those artists who will arrive on a date other than specified by the organizers. The groups are requested to arrive in Golestan Province by the afternoon of the 8th of June 2010.

Regulations

1. Participants will bring necessary tools for workshop except canvas (90x90cm & 100x80cm) which will be distributed at the workshop.
2. The workshop for all fields will be held for three days and there will eventually be an assessment.
3. The organizers will determine whether the drawing workshop will be held in a roofed or open space.

1. Individuals born between September 1st, 1994 and September 1st, 1985 are eligible to participate.

Note: Participants two months younger or older than the above dates are also eligible to participate in the festival.

2. Participants are required to submit two wallet-size photos of themselves (with their full name written on the back), a copy of their passport, and a copy of their latest academic certificate no later than 15th of May 2010. The group leader is required to submit a list of participants from each respective country as well as fields in which the group members will participate. These must be submitted prior to participation.
3. No participant is permitted to be accompanied by a friend or family member.
4. The organizing committee requires each individual participant to strictly follow the programs throughout the entire period of the festival, and no private meetings or personal business must be pursued during their stay in Iran. Participants are required to fully coordinate their activities with the organizing committee.
5. All participants are required to observe Islamic code of conduct and regulations of the festival which will be communicated to them during the event.
6. Accommodation costs will be met by the organizing committee. However, travel expenses to Iran must be met by the participants themselves.

Awards

1. Selected artists will be awarded plaque of honor and special prizes, including gold coins.
2. All participants will receive a certificate of participation in the festival.

Number of participants

Each country is entitled to send a maximum number of five members including the group leader.
Bangladeshi participants may submit work to the office of the Cultural Counsellor, Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran (House 54, Road 8A, Dhanmondi, Dhaka 1209, by the 30th May 2010

	Where Three Dreams Cross – 150 Years of Photography from India, Pakistan and Bangladesh Saturday, June 12, and Sunday, June 13, 2010 The exhibition?“Where Three Dreams Cross-150 Years of Photography from India, Pakistan and Bangladesh”, to be presented by the Fotomuseum Winterthur this summer (12.6. – 22.8.), is a broad survey of the history of South-Asian Photography. It does not reiterate a western view of “the East”, but shows how successive generations of photographers from the subcontinent have portrayed themselves and their eras. In the same vein, the accompanying symposium is meant to give an “inside view” of the historical background as well as the contemporary face of South-Asian photography. We have invited Indian, Pakistani and Bangladeshi experts-photographers, theoreticians, curators, teachers and activists-to present and discuss their own photographic works and thoughts as well as specific historical aspects. Leica Oskar Barnack Award 2010

All entries for the Leica Oskar Barnack Award 2010 must be made via the online ?? Application Form ?between 15th January and 15th March, 2010.

The ?Leica Oskar Barnack Award? competition is open to all professional photographers. To take part, participants must send in a series of photographs (minimum 10 up to a maximum of 12 images, only one series per participant) taken in 2009 or long-term projects containing at least one photo from 2009.

The ?Leica Oskar Barnack Newcomer Award? competition is open to any (prospective) professional photographer aged 25 or under at the time of entering. To take part, participants must send in a series of photographs (minimum 10 up to a maximum of 12 images, only one series per participant) taken in 2009 or long-term projects containing at least one photo from 2009.

The digital images prepared for uploading must be no larger than 1920 pixels wide and 1200 pixels high, but have to have at least one of these two maximum dimensions.

So an image with a height of 1200px may have any width less than or equal to 1920px and an image with a width of 1920px may have any height less than or equal to 1200px.

The images must also be stored with 72dpi in JPG format in the RGB color space for viewing on the web and none may exceed the maximum file size of 3 MB.
