Textile & Photography Installation at the Alchemy Festival, Southbank Centre, London

A new wave of Bangladeshi fashion designers come to the Alchemy Festival
10th?to 29th?April 2013, Southbank Centre, London

The Alchemy Festival is a fantastic annual showcase of music, dance, literature, design and debate from South Asia and the UK.
We are delighted to say that for the first time ever, the organisers of Alchemy have invited the social enterprise ?Paraa? to install an exhibition at the Southbank Centre.
The aim is to show to the world the best of up-and-coming Bengali fashion, photography and textiles. The focus of the exhibition is on creative practices rooted in the weaving traditions of Bangladesh.? This will be open to the public throughout the Alchemy festival.
Alchemy will be holding a fashion show on Friday 12th April from 7pm and there will be an exclusive chance to see designers: Tootli Rahman and Sujon Wallis, Kuhu Plamandon, Rahemur Rahman, Nasreen Raja, University students ( BUFT), Shama, Probartana,? Fatima and Miriam, Jatra and Rukia Begum.
The exhibition will also include two photography exhibitions by Enamul Hoque and a film by Underbelly productions.
There will also be the chance to participate in two lively and interesting panel discussions: Ruhul Abdin will talk about ?Power of Crafts? on Thursday 11th April @ 6:30pm and Maher Anjum will discuss the development of the Bangladeshi fashion sector in ?Alchemy Fashion Talk? on Friday 12th April at 6pm.

Enamul Hoque?Enamul Hoque is a photographer and film maker based in London. He has been a??professional photographer since 1989 and has worked on numerous campaigns for brands such as General Motors, Kodak, Nike, Sony, Virgin, Unilever, YKK among??others. Hoque is also a filmmaker and a partner in Underbelly Film and has been?making and producing films since 2003.??www.underbellyfilm.co.uk
Maher Anjum?is an independent researcher and consultant. She has recently been working with the British Council and London College of Fashion to explore the opportunities and barriers related to the development of the fashion sector in Bangladesh.

Time Magazine Person of the Year 2018. A photographer, writer, curator and activist, Shahidul Alam obtained a PhD in chemistry before switching to photography. His seminal work “The Struggle for Democracy” contributed to the removal of General Ershad. Former president of the Bangladesh Photographic Society, Alam set up the Drik agency, Chobi Mela festival and Pathshala, South Asian Media Institute, considered one of the finest schools of photography in the world. Shown in MOMA New York, Centre Georges Pompidou, Royal Albert Hall and Tate Modern, Alam has been guest curator of Whitechapel Gallery, Winterthur Gallery and Musee de Quai Branly. His awards include Mother Jones, Shilpakala Award and Lifetime Achievement Award at the Dali International Festival of Photography. Speaker at Harvard, Stanford, UCLA, Oxford and Cambridge universities, TEDx, POPTech and National Geographic, Alam chaired the international jury of the prestigious World Press Photo contest. Honorary Fellow of Royal Photographic Society, Alam is visiting professor of Sunderland University in UK and advisory board member of National Geographic Society. John Morris, the former picture editor of Life Magazine describes his book “My journey as a witness”, (listed in “Best Photo Books of 2011” by American Photo), as “The most important book ever written by a photographer.”
