Pathshala South Asian Media Institute invites applications for the post of Contractual (Part Time) Teachers (Job Title: Faculty member) to teach the short courses and workshops the institution offers (Basic Photography Course, Foundation Course, Digital Photography, Teen Photography etc.) under the supervision of Head of Photography/Academic Council/Faculty Moderator. The Faculty Member/s will be responsible for planning, organising and implementing an appropriate educational programme at Pathshala in a learning environment that guides and encourages students to develop and fulfill their academic potential along with delivering an innovative and inspirational educational module that will positively impact the students? learning. Teachers need to be competent in teaching photography techniques including camera exposures, digital photography and composition as well as the appropriate use of light and lens. Other responsibilities include establishing, developing and implementing the curriculum and course materials for each semester. Contributing to the development and co-ordination of a particular area of the curriculum; providing a variety of learning materials, designing projects, organising group sessions and other activities to enhance the learning experience; maintaining discipline in accordance with the rules of the institute; performing certain duties including student support, counseling students with academic problems and providing student encouragement by treating all students fairly within a professional relationship. The faculty member should also  ensure that there is total confidentiality of all material used in the Pathshala courses and that there are no situations leading to a conflict of interest with competing institutions without prior managment approval. Preparing reports on one?s own activities with results against targets and suggestions will need to be presented in faculty  meetings.
S/he should be holding a minimum graduate or higher degree with good spoken and written Bangla and English and have at least 2 years of working experiences in a related field along with teaching experience on relevant subjects or work experience as a professional. Knowledge of relevant technology is assumed. Job location is in Dhaka and salary is negotiable with other benefits as per organisational policy.

His/her responsibilities include assisting the principal in providing the overall leadership of Pathshala; setting goals for the Photography Department together with the principal, manage and lead the Photography Department in order to achieve these goals for the department and for Pathshala as a whole; developing curriculum for the Photography department of Pathshala South Asian Media Institute; guiding the team in the development and implementation of short and long-term courses, schedules and programme plans; evaluating performance and the effectiveness of training programmes, providing recommendations for improvement and developing testing evaluation procedures; representing the Photography department of Pathshala when and where necessary; keeping liaison with universities, funding & donor agencies, media institutes and other media organisations; taking classes as a regular faculty member; seeking out interesting ideas and innovations through information, knowledge management; promoting regional and international collaboration, team building and learning and bearing overall responsibility for designing short & long course and training programmes after consulting with the academic council. ? The Barometer Story

Here is the problem a professor of physics had at the beginning of the XXth century:

“I received a call from a colleague about a student. He felt he had to give him a 0/20 to a physics question, while the student claimed a 20/20. Professor and student came to an agreement to select an impartial arbiter, and I was selected.
I read the examination question: “Show how it is possible to determine the height of a building with a barometer.”

Aesthetics in Photography by Morten Krogvold

Morten Krogvold has a major impact as a teacher in Norway and abroad. He has so far held more than 100 workshops in Norway & other countries of the world and this is his 6th workshop in Bangladesh. His dynamic black & white and color photographs have been extensively exhibited throughout the world, including Bangladesh, the Republic of China, France Botswana, Canada, Sweden, USA & of course, Norway. Krogvold was appointed Knight of the Order of St. Olav in 2005, received Hasselblad master award in 2002 and he is creative director for Nordic Light International Festival of Photography, Norway from 2006-2012.

The objective of this workshop is to develop participants? aesthetics in photography. Morten will look at the portfolios of each participants concentrating on composition, light, printing & craftsmanship and give valuable feedback. Participants should be prepared to receive honest and hard feedback and push their limits. The focus will be on developing a single image; there will be assignments all through the workshop. His lectures are as inspiring as his photos. It starts with history of art and end with the formation of classic paintings and its relationship with photography.

His teaching methods are novel. Using painting, literature, sculpture and music for inspiration, he imbibes in his students an appreciation of life and culture, which they can use to drive their own photography. Morten is an energetic, lively & resourceful presence in any room, believes ?the winners of the future are those who use creativity & individual thought.?

  • Timing-?Workshop will meet everyday from 9 am to 6 pm- but participants should be prepared to put in longer hours.

  • Logistics-?The fee excludes the cost of accommodation, food, visa fee and all kind of logistics. The students should carry his/her digital camera and laptop.

Dr. Shahidul Alam, eminent photographer and social activist from Bangladesh will facilitate a two and half day Master Class and documentary photography workshop titled ?Photography for social impact ? To know, one must imagine? from 19 November ? 21 November 2012 at Indian Council for Cultural Relations ( ICCR) , Kolkata.http://www.worldpressphoto.org/content/shahidul-alam
This workshop is being jointly organised by British Council and DRIK India.
The workshop will address the role and methods of documentary photography in achieving social impact. The culture of human rights and community goals has become a necessary aspect of contemporary public discussion and the impact of photography deserves a great part of the credit in spreading and rendering that culture readily perceptible and comprehensible. Photographic images at their passionate and truthful best are as powerful as words can ever be. If they alone cannot bring change, they can at least provide an understanding mirror of man?s actions, thereby sharpening awareness and awakening conscience. The workshop will help participants interpret and to create photograph that stand out from the crowd and questions the objectives of one?s perception and participation in the present visual world in which we live.

In & Out- New generation photographers

From Munem Wasif’s Diary (8th September)

It was truly inspiring yesterday. We had our final presentation. It has been wonderful experience for me in last three years; Pathshala has given me so much as a student, as a teacher. I think more than photography I have changed as a human being.
But it was also not that easy also. I have different kind of students. They were passionate, lazy, egocentric, blank, sweet, old, psycho. Mix of personalities. I guess it was  harder for them than to me. I was rude, mean, arrogant to them but thorough the process I have also learned to be patient, adaptive and calm. But we also learned to love each other.
Thanks to Abir bhai who trusted on me and ask me to teach. Thanks to Biraz for traveling to Australia otherwise i think i will not become a teacher. I was just there to fill up the gap as a proxy teacher but sadly the proxy became too long.

Greg Sebastian Marinovich is the only one of the ‘Bang Bang Club’s’ four members to be standing on his feet today. Two are dead and the third’s legs have been amputated. Between them, they share two Pulitzers and a host of other prestigious awards from all over the world. Greg, 50, co-authored a book on the ‘club’ that was made into a film two years ago. And what a film it was: a visual narrative on the lives of four ‘conflict photographers’–all white South Africans who grew up in the apartheid regime, opposed it and exposed the apartheid regime-sponsored violence to the world-whose lives intertwined and took them to many parts of the world to record telling images of war and strife.
