Dear friends, The Asian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) has received information that the Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police has arrested Mr. Adilur Rahman Khan, one of most respected human rights defenders in Bangladesh and the Secretary of Odhikar. A group of plain clothed men picked up Mr. Adilur from his residence at?10:20 p.m., on 10 August 2013. Neither Adilur, nor the family was informed why they were taking Adilur into custody and where they were taking him. Later, media in Bangladesh have published reports, quoting police officers Adilur was arrested in relation to a case registered at Gulshan Police Station, for offenses punishable under the Information and Communications Technology Act, 2006. However, the Gulshan police has informed Odhikar that they had no case registered against Adilur at the station, and that the officers there learned about Adilur’s arrest through the media. There is serious concern about Adilur’s safety in custody. Please intervene immediately in this case, so that Adilur remains safe in custody and released without delay. Photographer, journalist, and human rights activist Shahidul Alam examines the issue of the increasing number of extra-judicial killings
in Bangladesh.
In 2004 the Bangladesh government created a new armed enforcement agency, The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), in response to a perceived law and order crisis. From early days RAB became notorious for the number of people that have been killed, allegedly during gun battles, because they?ve been caught in the ?crossfire?.
Shahidul Alam?s Crossfire project was first shown in Bangladesh in 2010 to draw attention to these killings. The government responded by shutting down the show. Eventually, facing a court ruling in favor of Alam, the government backed down and the show was reopened for a day.
Following a successful showing at the Queens Museum of Art New York in April, 2012, this exhibition marks the first time it will be shown in Australia.

In ?Crossfire,? an exhibition of photographs at the Queens Museum of Art in New York that closes on Sunday the 6th, acclaimed Bangladeshi photographer and activist Shahidul Alam chronicles the extra-judicial killings allegedly committed by Bangladesh?s Rapid Action Battalion, or RAB.Over a thousand victims have been ?cross-fired,? or executed by police without trial, in the last four years in the South Asian country, human rights activists claim. Many more people, perhaps thousands in total, have suffered similar fates, they say.

Bangladeshi photographer and human rights activist Shahidul Alam?s Crossfire exhibition will open in the Partnership Gallery at the Queens Museum of Art on 15th April, 2012 and run until May 6th, 2012. Announcing PROOF?s Award for the Emerging Photojournalist
About the Award
PROOF knows that emerging photojournalists want to do meaningful projects related to human rights and social justice issues but oftentimes don?t have the funds or connections to do so. For this reason, we?re offering an award to help an emerging photojournalist jumpstart their project by providing funding and support from the media community.
For this award, we have put together a panel of judges including: Leora Kahn, Executive Director of PROOF, Ed Kashi of VII, Amy Yenkin from the Open Society Foundations, and Ann Friedman, Executive Editor of GOOD.
The selected photojournalist will receive USD $2500 to put toward their project. The final three candidates will have their work showcased through GOOD. Barack Obama has abandoned a commitment to veto a new security law that allows the military to indefinitely detain without trial American terrorism suspects arrested on US soil who could then be shipped to?Guant?namo Bay. Human rights groups accused the president of deserting his principles and disregarding the long-established principle that the military is not used in domestic policing. Bangladesh Human Rights Portal revived
After the highly successful workshop : “Learning rights to make a difference” conducted by Drik and Internews, the Bangladesh Human Rights Portal has been revived. With the ongoing training programme with World Press Photo “Press Freedom 2.o” over the next five years, www.banglarights.net is set to play an important role in promoting the rights of citizens in Bangladesh.
We have a very exciting team consisting of Chulie De Silva, Sohel Manzur and Aminuzzaman running the programme with D.J. Clark playing a mentoring role.
